Executive Directors Message
The hearings on Brett Kavanaugh revealed a vast left-wing conspiracy. I must say, the left did a masterful job. The Kavanaugh hearings were a symphony of smear, accusations, innuendo and supporting protests. The stumbling blocks of reason and logic were blown away like chaff in a windy wheat field. It was a merciless and masterful job. Saul Alinsky would be proud. On Saturday, October 6th, the ISRA will host our Annual Sighting-in-Day at the ISRA Range, near Kankakee. The hours are 9:30am to 3:30pm. If you have a shotgun, rifle, pistol or muzzleloader that you want to sight-in, Saturday is the day. Although Sighting-in-Day was designed for hunters, we will help you with anything, even if you are not using the firearm for hunting. Before hunting, or anytime you are going shooting, you should make sure your firearm is in good working order. Shotguns need particular scrutiny because of the barrels. A shotgun barrel is built thin to make it light enough to use efficiently. Because of this, any obstruction in the barrel could cause the barrels to burst, a most unpleasant event. A friend of mine found a spider web in the barrel of his shotgun and decided to shoot the spider web out of the barrel. He managed to blow the end of his barrel completely off. The spider wasn’t in the barrel but there was a good story to tell at the Spider Convention. The fact is that mud, snow, or part of a wad left behind by a defective load can raise havoc in a shotgun barrel. It is a good idea to carry a cleaning device with you while hunting, a cable cleaning device like you will find in an Otis (TM) or similar kit will work fine. When sighting in a rifle, pistol, muzzleloader or shotgun, it is best to have 25 or more rounds of ammunition of the same kind you are going to use to hunt with. Shotgun slugs are the most finicky of all ammunition, in my experience. If you are going to test two or three different slugs, you should have 25 rounds of each type. When I say the same type, I mean exactly the same type, not only slug weight and velocity, but right down to the lot number, if possible. Most shotgun slug companies make several varieties of slugs. A few years ago, a fellow brought 25 rounds of slugs but they were five rounds of five different kinds. It was a waste of time. We will have a couple of trap machines set up to throw birds, as well as a pattering board to test patterns. If you want to practice shooting clay birds trap loads will do just fine. If you want to pattern your shotgun you should use the same ammunition you are going to hunt with. The same is true for any hunting ammunition used in a rifle, pistol or muzzleloader. We will serve light snacks, coffee, and chili for lunch if you care to partake. See you Saturday!
