Thursday Bulletin – October 24, 2024 Executive Director's Message Richard Pearson |
Up-coming Elections The days for the general election are winding down to a precious few. Every vote counts. Vote early, if possible. The last day to vote early is Monday, November 4. Remember...go vote!!! The Second Amendment is on the ballot and it needs your support! LITIGATION UPDATE There has not been much activity on litigation involving the ISRA since my report last week. Harrel v. Raoul (PICA challenge) – final briefing was due 10/20/24 to S.D.Ill. Judge McGlynn has all the documents before him now and is undoubtedly working on his ruling. Just before the deadline, the Illinois Attorney General's Office dumped more than 3000 more pages on Judge McGlynn's desk. If the Judge finds the PICA unconstitutional, the A.G.'s office requests, via these additional documents, that he still
leaves the magazine ban in place. I do not think the Constitution works that way, Mr. Attorney General. * * * Housing authorities in many parts of the United States, including Illinois, have been, admittedly, tough on law-abiding gun owners. The Housing Authority of
Cortland, New York, was no different. After months of litigation, a Federal judge has issued a permanent injunction against the Cortland Housing Authority ending their attempts to disarm law-abiding citizens. If you recall, this is the Housing Authority that was having their residents turn in their firearms only to have the Housing Authority employees sell them on the side.
Unbelievable, but true. * * * For months now, researcher John Lott has been claiming that crime is going up, not down, despite what the FBI claims. In 2022, crime was supposed to have gone down 2.1% but, recently, the FBI quietly revised it's figures and said it actually went
up 4.5%. Many in the media are still reporting the 2.1% number and ignoring the FBI's latest revision. In this important election year, this one little fact proves why no one trust the media. Hunting Season is Here Bow hunting season is now underway and, with the crops being cleared, it should be a good season. Some statistics from the 2023 season are finally in. It turns out that 20% of the deer that were harvested were taken with straight walls rifle cartridges. That is much higher than I suspected it would be. I understand why this is true because they are very accurate and they recoil much less than shotgun slugs. I
would think that will increase significantly this hunting season. Good luck to all you hunters out there! Sighting-In Day 2024 Last Saturday, October 19, we had Sighting-In Day at the Range and it went very
well. The weather was beautiful. Everything worked perfectly. I want to thank all the volunteers and all those who came in to have their firearm sighted-in. As usual, we found quite a few loose scopes and firearms that needed to be lubricated, but all that was taken care of by our able people. We had electronic targets set up at 300 yards which made the sighting-in of the long-range rifles much easier. We look forward to Sighting-In Day 2025 next year.
Do not miss it! You Can't Make This Stuff Up This tongue-in-cheek, informative press release from the ISRA went out on October 23, 2024, in response to an awkward, “gun safety” campaign event. The irony is definitely not lost on us! ISRA Offering Free Firearm Safety & Training Lessons to Lucas Kunce, Adam Kinzinger The Illinois State Rifle Association – one of the oldest and most respected gun organizations in the United States, released the following statement: “After learning about an incident yesterday in Missouri where a reporter was accidentally shot during a campaign event in the backyard of a private residence while U.S. Senate candidate Lucas Kunce (D-MO) and former Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) violated commonly known safety rules by firing at steel targets in close range with an AR-15 using inappropriate ammunition, the ISRA would like to offer a complimentary firearm and safety
training class at our 5-star range in Kankakee, Illinois area – Kinzinger’s hometown. We don’t often talk about our range and academy – and we should – because it’s one of the finest facilities anywhere in the country. Over the years, we’ve trained well over 50,000 people, including active-duty military and civilians; National Guard members; people starring in television shows and
movies; and Olympic and Junior Olympic team members. Our range has also won numerous awards and certificates of recognition from the National Guard and other respected organizations. In addition to teaching firearm safety and marksmanship skills, we also teach wound care and First Aid training – something that would have been very useful as they applied bandages to the wounded
reporter. We’re glad he is ok and that his injuries were not serious. Over the last several years, both Lucas Kunce and Adam Kinzinger have called for an “assault weapons” ban, but the irony is that on Tuesday – they were caught firing the exact same type of firearm they want eliminated from gun collections. This is hypocrisy at its finest.”

Tidbits October 24, 1861 – Workers of the Western Union telegraph company link the Eastern and Western telegraph networks in Salk Lake City, Utah, completing the transcontinental line between Washington D. C. and San Francisco. Stephen J. Field, Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, set President Abraham Lincoln a telegram verifying that the system would work. Workers on the west end of the telegraph line had to carry everything over the mountains, including insulators, wire and poles. There was nothing there for them to build infrastructure. It was an arduous task, but it helped keep California in the Union and cemented the relations between the Eastern and Western United States. October 26, 1775 – King George III of England spoke before the British Parliament regarding the growing worries of rebellion in America. King George III gave Parliament his consent to dispatch troops against his colonial subjects. The Continental Congress resisted this and offered the King and his Parliament an olive branch, a petition, which failed. In January 1776, Thomas Paine published a pamphlet entitled “Common Sense”, which was anti-monarchal, to persuade the colonists to fight for their liberty. October 27, 1873 – Joseph Glidden, DeKalb, Illinois farmer, patents barbed wire. Others had experimented with similar fencing systems but Glidden came up with the process to put two strands of wire together with additional barbs which could be mass-produced. The invention of “barbwire” would end the wide open ranges and change America forever. October 28, 1886 – The Statue of
Liberty is dedicated on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor. The statue was a gift from the people of France as a token of friendship. The invocation was made by President Grover Cleveland. The Statue of Liberty took 10 years for France to build. She was built in 350 parts, eventually standing 151 feet high and weighing 225
tons. The statue was constructed and assembled in France, then disassembled, packed and shipped to the United States. October 29, 1929 – “Black Tuesday”, the day of the 1929 Stock Market crash. In hours, billions of dollars were lost and the industrialized world dove into a
depression. One major factor were banks speculating in the Stock Market with depositors' money. When the news of the depression hit, those who had their money in the banks rushed to pull their money out, but the banks did not have their cash on hand. This caused what is know as a “run” on the banks. By 1933, 4000 banks had failed and closed. President Roosevelt
and Congress then established the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) to protect depositors' fund. This new entity brought a new sense of stability and so, at the end of 1933, the runs on the banks came to an end. October 30, 1938 – Orson Welles broadcasts the radio play “War of the Worlds”, sending many Americans into
panic. As many families sat down to listen to the radio, a simulated news bulletin broke in to the regular broadcasting. There were Martians landing in New Jersey! It was so realistic that many Americans fled their homes. Looking at New Jersey today, it seems quite possible that the Martians DID land and colonize
there!
